About Dr Evan Willingham
Evan grew up in northwest Queensland in the mining town of Mount Isa where he attended both primary and high schools. He gained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Queensland and has practiced as a general, metabolic and obesity surgeon and gastrointestinal endoscopist in Toowoomba for almost 20 years. Evan’s early medical career, however, commenced as a General Practitioner. Whilst on that career path Evan honed his medical knowledge and skills and developed a deep understanding of what true holistic care entailed, leaving him with a strong respect for that demanding speciality. Evan then returned to the Royal Brisbane Hospital and commenced his specialist training in General Surgery.
On completion of his Fellowship and admission to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS), Evan returned to his regional heritage and commenced practising in Toowoomba. In his early years here, he took on the role of Director of Surgery at Toowoomba Hospital. After moving into private practice, he took on the role of Supervisor of Surgical Training to help guide the next generation of surgeons. Evan is today, still involved with public work as a visiting Senior Specialist at the Toowoomba Hospital.
Evan has a keen interest in bariatric (weight loss) surgery and enjoys the healthy transformative effects this can have on his patients’ lives. He was the first surgeon in the region to introduce minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques in bariatric surgery and was also the first (and currently only) surgeon to perform robotic bariatric surgery in the region. Evan and his team are deeply committed to empowering patients by providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to improve their health and quality of life.
Evan is well known for his good sense of humour and kind, compassionate nature. Combined with his extensive knowledge and experience in the medical and surgical fields, Evan’s patients can be confident in their ability to make well-informed choices about their surgical weight-loss options and know that they will be in very good hands both during and after surgery.
